Founded by Gene Kay in a remote canyon at 8,000 feet elevation in a small log cabin workshop, the company began with a unique origin story that shaped their attention to detail and commitment to quality. For nine years, they operated from this remote mountain location where every bag of green coffee had to be carried uphill through snow and ice, and their roaster was powered by a generator. In 1994, Silver Canyon moved to their current location north of Boulder on a mesa surrounded by open space and wildlife. As the first small batch, specialty roasters in Boulder, Colorado, they have grown to become the most experienced group of coffee professionals in the state. Over 39 years, they have built expertise across multiple generations and paradigms in the coffee business. The company's singular focus is producing extraordinary coffees through their hand-roasting process, which they have refined over thousands of hours. They maintain one of the widest selections of specialty coffees found anywhere in the world, offering as many as 30 unique origins and creating distinctive blends from these coffees. Their roasting operation runs four days a week following a fully manual process. Silver Canyon Coffee takes exceptional care in sourcing, cultivating long-term relationships with suppliers, farmers, and importers - some spanning decades. They exclusively source premium, specialty grade coffees with emphasis on seasonality and sustainable production. Their facility is certified organic, and they source many certified organic and Fair Trade coffees. Facing Colorado's unique environmental challenges at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, they store green beans in humidity-controlled environments and consistently monitor temperature, moisture content, ambient temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure to make daily adjustments to their roasting technique. They prioritize freshness, delivering coffee that is one to three days out of the roaster to ensure optimal quality. The company serves a diverse clientele including hotels, restaurants, coffee houses, espresso bars, specialty retailers, and grocery chains. They have been part of the Boulder County Farmer's Markets for 13 years, demonstrating their deep community roots.
