Portland Coffee Roasters

Portland, OR

Portland Coffee Roasters was founded in 1996 by Mark Stell after he attended the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he learned about climate change and sustainability. Mark's visits to coffee farms in Costa Rica and El Salvador informed his understanding of what it takes to grow quality coffee and shaped his vision for the company. The company's mission is "To forge positive human connections and build a socially responsible business through great coffee." Since its inception, Portland Coffee Roasters has sourced coffee directly from farmers while building sustainable relationships with them and the communities they support. For more than 20 years, they've worked to create lasting connections extending from their local community to farmers, customers, and partners. Portland Coffee Roasters is committed to global stewardship. Their first direct trade shipment came from La Hilda Estate in Costa Rica, and their first project in 1999 was with Finca El Paternal in Guatemala. These long-standing relationships have laid a foundation for many projects at the origin of their coffee and beyond. The company only purchases specialty grade Arabica coffee that scores well above minimum standards in their own lab. All their coffees are fully traceable from farm to cup, either sourced directly from farms they have visited or from trusted importation partners who maintain meticulous records about coffee origins. After finding great coffee, Portland Coffee Roasters works to create roast profiles that retain each coffee's sense of place, then enhance it with the talents of their roasting team. From light and sparkling single-origin offerings to full-bodied and chocolatey dark roasted blends, every coffee has a sweet spot that they aim to hit every time. The company is dedicated to sustainability, from bean to cup, not only in their local community but in the communities where they source their high-quality coffee beans. Their employees are genuine coffee experts who dedicate themselves to serving customers and maintaining thriving relationships with trusted farmers throughout the world. What began with just a staff of two has grown into a respected specialty coffee roaster that continues to focus not just on coffee, but on improving both people and planet through strong and lasting relationships with their global coffee community.
