Mural City Coffee Company is a family-owned and operated cafe and roastery established in 2018, nestled in the heart of downtown Dothan, Alabama. The company takes its name from Dothan's myriad wall-sized murals depicting historic events and prominent people in the area, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the community. The business was founded by the Swan family, including Darrin and Gina Swan as co-founders, with their son Zach Swan and his wife Destiny joining the venture. Unlike many historic preservation projects, the transformation of their 1920s building from an abandoned electronics store into a vibrant coffee and tea destination was a remarkable do-it-yourself labor of love that required significant personal investment and risk. To fund the renovation, the Swan family had to sell their house and secure bank financing, eventually finding support from Charles D. Harper who understood their vision. The building, which is a contributing structure to Dothan's Main Street Commercial District and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, underwent extensive restoration work that the family largely performed themselves to maintain historical integrity and authenticity. The renovation process was meticulous and preservation-focused. Zach Swan spent six months soda blasting every piece of wood in the building to preserve the original materials, and the family chose to sand the floors themselves rather than pressure wash them, preserving old ruts, paint splatters, and other historical markings. They insisted on using period-appropriate materials like copper pipes instead of modern PVC, and carefully salvaged and repurposed existing building materials throughout the project. Notable architectural features include a transformed Singletary & Whiddon vault that now serves as a cozy reading room, with the original thick black door and exposed brick walls bathed in soft light and lined with bookshelves and comfortable seating. The family incorporated reclaimed wood from the building into various elements including the staircase, bakery case, merchandise cabinets, and tea bar shelving. Some tin tiles from the original ceiling were even traded to a neighboring cafe in exchange for meals. The interior design emphasizes vintage and historical elements, featuring a 1950s-era card catalogue from the University of Georgia that now holds tea information, midcentury cups and carafes, and circa-1950 bullet trash cans emblazoned with the Mural City logo that were salvaged from the University of Iowa. Mural City offers a curated selection of specialty coffees, fine wines on self-serve taps, house-baked goods, and a broad selection of loose leaf teas. The company operates as both a cafe and roastery, providing freshly roasted coffee alongside their beverage and food offerings. Beyond their core products, they offer additional services including private event rentals, barista classes, and online shopping for beans, teas, and merchandise. The business has become a community hub that attracts an eclectic crowd including medical students, older residents, couples, and young families.
