LoCo Beans Coffee is a boutique coffee roastery founded by artisan roasters and long-time Leesburg residents Chau Pham and Paul Modolo, who operate from their distinctive little red "silo" at Market Station in Leesburg, Virginia. Both engineers by education and trade, the founders have been on their coffee adventure for over a decade, bringing the flavors and aroma of freshly roasted coffee to Loudoun County with an unwavering commitment to quality and freshness.
The company's philosophy centers on four core principles: quality, careful sourcing, advanced equipment, and repeatable processes. Their commitment to quality drives them to produce the finest roasted coffee through meticulous sourcing, advanced roasting equipment, and an uncompromising dedication to freshness. They maintain working relationships with multiple major importers with global reach and reputation for meticulous grading and handling, enabling them to reliably select among the very finest coffees from growing regions around the world.
Their roasting operation features a carefully selected Diedrich 2.5kg roaster, chosen after a comprehensive 6-month study complete with spreadsheets, evaluation criteria, weighting, and scoring. The roaster uses an efficient infrared heating system and sensors/controls that enable tight control of roasting conditions, with a unique design feature that diverts combustion by-products around the roasting drum rather than through the beans. Through tightly-controlled experiments and cupping sessions, they create custom roasting profiles tailored to bring out the complex flavors and aroma of each unique coffee, roasting in small batches of approximately 4.5 pounds to yield consistent, high-quality results.
LoCo Beans offers an extensive selection of single-origin coffees from around the world, including Brazilian, Colombian, Ethiopian (Yirga Cheffe and Sidamo Decaf), Kenyan (Thangathi), 100% Kona from the Big Island, and Sumatran (Mandheling Tangse Rhino). They also craft special blends including House Blend, Kona Blend (20% Kona Coffee), +3dB Blend, Masters' Roast, Espresso Grande, and Vietnamese (Da Lat Blend). From time to time, they feature special coffee offerings that are normally scarce or difficult to transport, such as Ecuadorian Finca Maputo, Colombian "Seeds of Life," and Ugandan (Chanzo).
The company emphasizes freshness above all, roasting coffee several times per week to ensure peak flavor and meet demand. Their packaging protects beans from damaging exposure to oxygen, moisture, and light. They've adapted their operations to include innovative silo dropboxes for convenient contactless pickup, maintaining stringent cleanliness standards while providing exceptional customer service. LoCo Beans has also embraced natural processing methods, offering El Salvadoran natural-processed coffee and 100% Kona Natural, which undergo the dried-in-the-fruit natural process to create complex flavor profiles with notes of chocolate, sweet lime, and buttery cashew nut.
