Fort Findlay Coffee & Doughnut Shoppe began its legacy in 1986 when Don and Marie Hanes invested their savings into a Dunkin' Doughnuts franchise. The business was truly a family affair, with their sons Brook, Nathan, and Duncan helping out before and after school, developing relationships with regular customers who became like a second family. In 2002, Brook Hanes attended a conference titled "Roasting in the Retail Environment" that inspired him to purchase their own roaster, transforming the franchise into a locally-owned coffee roaster. Their first American-made roaster was named Elvis and was their "saving grace," followed by George (named after Brook's grandfather) and Lucy. Since 2003, Fort Findlay has been sourcing the finest beans from coffee regions worldwide and roasting them in-house to create quality flavors and aromas. The shop is known not only for its freshly roasted coffee but also for its handmade, hand-cut doughnuts including bacon maple fritters, fruit-filled treats, blueberry cake doughnuts, and classic glazed varieties. Fort Findlay demonstrates its commitment to community through various charitable efforts, supporting Fair Trade Certified products and numerous charities including Metanoia Missions International, City Mission of Findlay, Susan G Komen for the Cure, and several coffee-related humanitarian causes that help communities in coffee-growing regions. Today, Fort Findlay continues to serve local customers daily while maintaining a broader impact through their charitable work and commitment to quality. The recent passing of founder Don Hanes in May 2025 marks the end of an era, but the family legacy continues to stand the test of time.
