Deep River Roasters is a small micro-roastery founded in 2013 by Matt and Bethe Resnisky, who began their coffee journey roasting for local specialty markets, family, and friends. The company's love affair with coffee began in 2003 when Matt proposed to Bethe over a cup of coffee at Amore Breakfast in Ogunquit, Maine - a romantic beginning that continues to inspire their passion for sharing quality coffee.
Located in the historic Witch Hazel Factory building in Centerbrook, Connecticut, adjacent to the Essex Steam Train, Deep River Roasters has grown from a hobby into a successful small business. Matt transitioned from a corporate sales career to pursue his passion for coffee roasting full-time, driven by his quest for the perfect cup of coffee that started with internet research years ago.
The company specializes in small-batch roasting with a focus on quality and local community connections. Their signature blend, "Dark Fin," is described as a very smooth dark roast with a smokey finish and notes of dried fruits, dark chocolate, and almond - despite no almonds being added, showcasing their expertise in developing complex flavor profiles. They also offer other distinctive roasts including Ethiopian Yirgacheffe with bright citrus notes, XYZ Blend with bold and complex characteristics, "The Sarge" medium roast breakfast blend, and a high-quality decaf Sidamo with floral notes.
Deep River Roasters has built strong community partnerships, distributing their coffee to 28 locations throughout Connecticut and one in Rhode Island. Their retail partners include local cafes, restaurants, bed & breakfasts, specialty food stores, and markets such as Running Brook Farms, The Redhouse, Scott's Meats & Deli, and McQuade's Marketplace, among others.
The company operates with a commitment to supporting local businesses and community values, as demonstrated when Matt chose not to open a retail location near a non-profit coffee shop that already carried his specialty roasts. Their cafe operates Monday through Thursday 6am-3pm, Fridays 6am-5pm, Saturday 8am-5pm, and Sunday 8am-3pm, serving both as a roastery and a community gathering place.
