Buffalo Coffee Roastery

Sanborn, NY

Buffalo Coffee Roastery has a rich heritage dating back to 1979, when it was originally established in California's Bay Area by Deborah London and partner Norm Weintraub. They pioneered the concept of on-site coffee roasting, bringing the roaster into the store for customers to experience the entire production process firsthand. Deborah was notably the first woman roaster in the area. The Buffalo Coffee Roastery location was opened in 1994 by current owners Kate and Sean Edwards. After Kate traveled to California multiple times to learn the roasting process from her sister, she recognized that the Western New York market was ready for specialty coffee. Using a 12-kilo San Franciscan coffee roaster, Buffalo Coffee Roastery became the first coffee house in the area to roast on site, allowing customers to experience the production, savor the aroma, and enjoy freshly roasted coffee directly in their store. For over 18 years, Kate continued to perfect the roasting process using their beautiful San Franciscan equipment. In 2020, after 27 years in the business and seeking a shorter commute and less hectic pace, Sean and Kate relocated to their current Sanborn location. They transitioned from operating a full café to focusing exclusively on roasting, while maintaining their wholesale business and retail coffee sales by the pound. The roastery specializes in high-quality Arabica beans, which thrive at higher altitudes and produce lower yields, making them more expensive but of superior quality compared to Robusta beans. Their roasting expertise encompasses various processes including French roast (dark and shiny with caffeine oils emerging), Italian/espresso roast (slightly lighter, perfect for espresso drinks), and full city roast (their standard for most coffees, bringing out the true flavor characteristics of each bean's origin). Buffalo Coffee Roastery offers an extensive selection including Dark Roasts and Blends, Coffees of The World, Organic options, Decaf varieties, and Flavored coffees. With the exception of their dark roast category, all their coffees are roasted to a Full City (medium) roast level to showcase the unique characteristics influenced by each region's growing conditions, altitude, sun, soil, and rainfall. The company prides itself on educating customers about proper grinding and brewing techniques, providing detailed guidance for various brewing methods including auto-drip, French press, and pour-over systems. Their commitment to quality extends from bean selection through the entire roasting process to the final cup, maintaining the tradition of roasting fine, world-class coffees that began over four decades ago.
