Backroom Coffee Roasters began its journey in 2010 in the back room of a bicycle shop, embodying the spirit of innovation and craftsmanship from its very inception. The company has since evolved and now operates from a rustic workshop just north of Columbus, surrounded by woods in Galena, Ohio, where they roast their small batch coffee with meticulous attention to quality over quantity.
The company's philosophy centers around being "tinkerers by trade," fine-tuning each coffee they roast until it meets their exacting standards. They describe themselves as feeling "at home where wrenches spin and the scent of roasting coffee wafts through the air," reflecting their unique blend of mechanical precision and artisanal coffee craftsmanship.
Currently owned and operated by Trent Lundberg, who stepped in when the original founder accepted a job offer in Colorado, Backroom Coffee Roasters continues to thrive under his leadership. Lundberg's natural fit for the role stems from his love of fresh-roasted coffee and lifelong passion for cycling, maintaining the company's connection to its bicycle shop origins. When not operating the business or promoting Backroom via their Bean Buggy, Lundberg enjoys mountain biking, attending exotic car shows, concerts, and exploring new restaurants.
The production team is led by Bena Bradford, who serves as Production Manager and brings deep passion for the coffee roasting process. Born and raised in Columbus, Bena is an enthusiastic sports fan supporting local teams including the Columbus Clippers, Ohio State Buckeyes, Columbus Blue Jackets, Columbus Crew, and Cincinnati Bengals. Her expertise extends beyond coffee into cooking, where she enjoys experimenting with flavors and recreating dishes from favorite restaurants. Bena finds particular joy in watching green coffee beans transform into colorful, fragrant roasts, which she then carefully packages for customers.
Backroom Coffee Roasters offers a diverse range of products including signature blends like their renowned "Biker Blend" and "The Horse," single origin coffees such as "The Elevation (Bali Blue Moon)" and Mexican Altura, as well as limited release coffees including their unique Whiskey War Barrel-Aged Coffee. Their commitment to small batch roasting ensures freshness and quality control while serving customers throughout the United States via shipping.
The company has established itself as a respected member of the Central Ohio coffee community, having participated in the Columbus Coffee Festival in 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2021. Their motto "Here's to coffee fueled inspiration!" encapsulates their belief that coffee serves as both fuel and catalyst for creativity and inspiration.
Coffee is described by the company as "the fuel that feeds us and is our catalyst for inspiration," demonstrating their deep appreciation for both the product they create and its impact on their customers' daily lives. Through their dedication to craftsmanship, community engagement, and quality small batch roasting, Backroom Coffee Roasters continues to serve as a locally owned small business that bridges the gap between artisanal coffee production and cycling culture.
