Amity Coffee Roasters & Cafe is a community-focused coffee roastery and cafe established in 2013 in Greenwood, Delaware. The company was founded on the premise of connecting great people with great coffee, taking its name from the Latin word "amity," meaning a friendly relationship. The business began when founder Marty Miller, a Delaware native, received his first coffee roaster as a Christmas gift from his wife in 2012. What started as a hobby quickly evolved into an obsession for coffee and the roasting experience. Utilizing resources from his family-owned metal-cutting and fabrication business, Marty collaborated with a designer and engineer to develop a sample roaster with unique control technology. In 2013, he partnered with longtime friends Justin and his wife Lisa, who were instrumental in building the brand and naming the company. They initially sold coffee by the bag at farmers markets, online, and to friends. The business expanded in 2014 when Marie Miller, who had married Marty's brother Dave, joined the team. Marie brought valuable experience from her time in Australia where she fell in love with coffee culture, and her subsequent work as a barista at an Annapolis, Maryland bakery. She spearheaded the efforts to establish a physical storefront for Amity Coffee. Amity Coffee officially opened its cafe doors in January 2015 with just a roaster and a starter espresso machine. By early summer of that year, they began selling made-from-scratch baked goods alongside their freshly-brewed coffee, establishing themselves as a cornerstone of the Greenwood community. The cafe and roastery is uniquely housed in the historic fire hall garage in downtown Greenwood, creating a distinctive atmosphere for customers. Currently owned and operated by Melody and Elmer Slaubaugh, who acquired the business from the original founders, Amity Coffee continues to maintain its commitment to thoughtful roasting, high-quality brews, and community connection. The Slaubaughs, who had previously dreamed of owning a coffee shop, took over operations to continue the legacy while maintaining the original values and mission. The company operates as both a roastery and cafe, roasting coffee beans in-house using their custom-built roaster and serving a variety of espresso-based drinks, drip coffee, pour-overs, and fresh baked goods. They roast on Tuesdays and ship on Thursdays, ensuring fresh coffee for their customers. Amity Coffee emphasizes sourcing quality ingredients, celebrating intentional practices, cultivating meaningful connections, and supporting community growth through partnerships with other small businesses and local initiatives. The cafe provides a casual and inviting space with plenty of couches, chairs, and tables, offering free WiFi and serving as a community gathering place. Their mission is to be a catalyst of change, connection, and growth that creates a thriving, better-connected community where everyone feels valued and loved, regardless of whether they are lifelong locals or just passing through.
